Technical Manager

About Luke
I’m Luke John Emmett – an award-winning lighting designer, event and production manager, and creative producer from Bathford. I’m the founder of Theatre Bath and co-director of the Theatre Bath Bus, a unique mobile theatre and creative space.
With over 20 years’ professional experience, my work ranges from lighting musicals and managing festivals to producing large-scale community projects and delivering livestreams and hybrid events. I’ve collaborated with theatres, festivals, councils, and international brands, always combining creativity with calm technical expertise.
- In 2017 he was voted 16th most influential person in Bath in a poll run by the Bath Chronicle and was also listed as one of the 17 top Twitter accounts in Bath.
- In 2018 he was voted 23rd most influential person in Bath in a similar poll.
- In 2018 the Theatre Bath Bus won the Creative Bath Creative Space award and also won a best venue award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
My interest in theatre began at school when I operated the lights for Little Shop of Horrors. Soon after, I joined the Theatre Royal Bath’s Young People’s Theatre Production Group, learning alongside industry professionals. At sixteen, I was appointed Deputy Stage Manager on Peter Pan at the Theatre Royal Main House, and went on to work with the Education Department’s summer school project, Storm on the Lawn.
I studied a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Performance) at City of Bath College, graduating with triple distinction. Although I trained in acting, my real passion was always technical theatre.
In 2004, I gained a place at the Guildford School of Acting (GSA) Conservatoire on their one-year fast-track Stage Management & Technical Theatre course. After graduating, I worked freelance as a technician with companies including Theatek Ltd, Enlightened Lighting, and Invention Arts (now Chapel Arts Centre).
In 2011, I founded Theatre Bath, an online hub designed to champion and connect theatre in Bath. Highlights include the Bath Theatre Matters Conference, a city-wide response to threatened arts cuts, and partnerships with the Bath Chronicle to protect arts coverage.
In 2017, I co-founded the Theatre Bath Bus with Zoe Bailey — a single-decker bus converted into a mobile theatre and creative venue. The Bus has toured schools, festivals, and communities, and won both a Creative Bath Award and a Best Venue Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Over the past two decades I’ve worked across theatre, festivals, and cultural projects in roles spanning:
-
Lighting Design – creating atmosphere & storytelling for musicals, plays, and concerts.
-
Production & Technical Management – ensuring shows run safely and smoothly.
-
Event & Site Management – overseeing major city-wide events such as Bath Festivals’ Party in the City.
-
Marketing & Social Media – building visibility for organisations including Bath Fringe Festival, Tell Your Story & Rag and Bone Arts CIC.
-
Creative Producing – producing the Forest of Imagination, a large-scale public art festival attended by over 6,000 people.
-
Live Streaming & Hybrid Events – delivering online choirs, conferences, and international events with partners such as Alicia Keys, Pinterest, Frog Events and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
